Abena: Linx

Walking Boldly Through Life: Abena’s Story with Linx

A Life Redefined After Childhood Amputation

Abena’s journey began with a diagnosis of stage III sarcoma at just two years old. Due to a delayed diagnosis, she underwent an above-knee amputation at age three. Now, more than 30 years later, she reflects on her experiences not with limitation, but with empowerment, something she credits, in part, to her Blatchford Linx system.

Confidence in Every Step

“I can walk more confidently now, without worrying about falling or having to think about lifting my foot, which is such a relief!” Abena says. For her, navigating uneven ground was once a significant barrier. “Ramps and uneven surfaces have become easy for me. I can handle rocks, cobblestones, slopes, and steps both up and down with ease.”
The Linx system, with its dynamic response and adaptive terrain features, has transformed her mobility. Abena no longer feels restricted by her environment. “I can also put weight on my right side, which helps a lot when I’m putting on my shoes or simply standing in place. This ability allows me to relieve pressure from my left side. It feels great to move around comfortably and confidently.”

Independence as a Solo Traveller

As a passionate adventurer and solo traveller, Abena credits Linx with making the world feel more accessible. “Much of the world is inaccessible, and when travelling, you rely completely on your body and your abilities. I have never experienced such freedom in travelling as I have with my Linx.”

She’s travelled to 11 countries in just four years, something she never imagined doing before. “In my teenage years, something as seemingly small as a large hill could mean the difference between enjoying a view and watching others go see it. Now, with my Linx, I can climb alongside my peers, no longer sitting on the sidelines and missing out.”

Whether she’s hiking to a scenic viewpoint or navigating airport terminals, Abena feels supported. “I want to visit 50 countries before my 40th birthday (I still have time!). I trust and rely on my Linx to help me on this journey, as it already has.”

The Power of Personalised Care

Abena’s progress is also a result of the support she’s received from her clinicians, Jason Weining at Hanger Clinic in Chicago and Jane in Sheffield, UK.

“Jason is not only an amazing prosthetist but also a double amputee himself, so he truly understands what it’s like to live with a limb difference.” She describes her experience meeting him as “incredibly exciting”, finally someone who “gets it.”

Her connection with Jane, whom she met during a system update while travelling, also made a lasting impression. “She’s the first female prosthetist I’ve worked with, and as a woman, it has been nice to connect with her. She’s incredibly knowledgeable, and I’m excited to have her as a resource in my community.”

Standing Strong with Linx

Of all the features Linx offers, two stand out for Abena: dorsiflexion and stance resistance. “These two features are game-changers! This is why I chose the Linx over all other devices and models available in the disability and amputee space. They allow me to step more confidently and walk more boldly.”

Her confidence is not just practical, but joyful. “Have you seen me dance on my Linx? That’s all thanks to dorsiflexion and stance resistance!”

Identity Through Innovation

For Abena, her Linx isn’t just a mobility device; it’s a part of her identity. “Outside of its inner components, I LOVE my Kente print cover! This has allowed my prosthetic to be more than just a 'mobility' device; it is my fashion accessory, a statement, and an extension of my identity! I can't mention the Linx without talking about my 'Kente ', it's truly 1 of 1.”
